Verruca Treatment
What is a Verruca?
A verruca, commonly known as a plantar wart, is a benign growth on the skin that typically appears on the soles of the feet. Caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), verrucae can be both uncomfortable and unsightly. They often present as small, rough lesions and may cause pain, especially when pressure is applied while walking or standing.
Our Treatment Options:
At The Foot Fella Podiatry, we offer a range of effective treatments for verrucae, ensuring you can step back into your daily life with confidence.
Cryotherapy: This effective treatment involves freezing the verruca using very low temperatures. The rapid freezing disrupts the infected cells, causing them to rupture and release the virus into the bloodstream. This process triggers your body’s immune response to fight off the infection. While most patients may experience some discomfort during the procedure—especially if the verruca is on a weight-bearing area—any pain typically subsides within 1 to 5 days.
Verruca Needling: Developed by podiatrist Gordon Falknor in 1969, this specialized technique is an effective yet underutilised treatment for verrucae. It involves using a needle to puncture the infected skin multiple times, exposing the virus to the immune-rich subcutaneous fat layer. This can initiate a systemic immune response to help regress the verruca. Typically requiring only one or two sessions, this procedure is quick and painless, performed under local anesthesia. Most patients report minimal to no discomfort afterward.
Verrutop: Is a new treatment for verrucas and warts that utilises a special Nitrizinc complex applied directly to the affected area. It functions by drying out the lesions, which aids in reducing or eliminating the verruca.
The process begins with gently removing the hard skin over the verruca using a scalpel. This initial step is usually painless, although some minor bleeding may occur, which is normal. Following this, Verrutop is applied and left to dry. Most patients find this part comfortable, but some might experience a slight stinging or burning sensation that typically subsides by the end of the day. The number of sessions required can vary based on factors such as the size, location, and duration of the verrucas. Between appointments, patients are also advised to apply surgical spirit to the affected areas twice daily.
This treatment is quick and generally straightforward, offering benefits such as, no need to keep your foot dry afterward and you can quickly resume your normal activities.
Salicylic Acid Treatment: This treatment utilises a keratolytic process, where salicylic acid is applied directly to the verruca to gradually peel away the infected skin. This fosters natural healing and stimulates the immune system to combat the virus. Less invasive than many other methods, it typically requires multiple applications, making it ideal for mild to moderate verrucae. For severe cases, a stronger concentration can be used by a podiatrist for enhanced effectiveness. Most patients find the treatment painless, with only minor irritation reported at the application site.
“Tincture of Time” Approach: Sometimes, patience is key. This approach involves monitoring the verrucae over time, allowing your body's natural healing processes to take effect. We provide guidance and support throughout this period.
Occlusal Taping Treatment: This non-invasive method involves applying tape to the verruca, which deprives it of air. The combination of pressure and occlusion helps soften the verruca tissue and may eventually lead to its breakdown. For optimal results, consistent application over several weeks is necessary, making it suitable for patients committed to regular self-care.
