Nail Surgery
What is Nail Surgery?
Nail surgery is a common procedure performed to treat various nail conditions that cause pain, infection, or discomfort. It often involves the removal of part or all of the affected nail and surrounding tissue.
Common Causes of Ingrown Toenails
Understanding the causes of ingrown toenails can help prevent them. Common causes include:
Improper Nail Trimming: Cutting nails too short or rounding the edges can lead to ingrowth.
Tight Footwear: Shoes that do not fit properly can put pressure on the toes and contribute to ingrown nails.
Genetics: Some individuals may be predisposed to ingrown toenails due to the shape of their nails or feet.
Injury: Trauma to the toe, such as stubbing or dropping something on it, can cause the nail to grow incorrectly.
Poor Foot Hygiene: Failing to keep feet clean and dry can lead to infections and nail issues.
The Procedure
Consultation: During your initial visit, our podiatrist will evaluate your condition and discuss the best treatment options.
Anesthesia: Local anesthesia will be administered to ensure you are comfortable during the procedure.
Surgery: The podiatrist will carefully remove the affected nail or portion of it. In some cases, a chemical may be applied to prevent the nail from growing back.
Closure: The area will be cleaned and bandaged properly.
Insurance and Post-Operative Care
Driving: Please note that you will not be permitted to drive on the day of your surgery.
Rest: It is recommended to keep your leg elevated and rest for 24 hours post-surgery to aid in the healing process.
Follow-Up Care
Post-Operative Check: We will schedule a follow-up appointment 2 to 4 days after your surgery to change dressings and assess your recovery. Most patients can manage their post-operative care at home afterward. If needed, antibiotics will be prescribed.
